DIY Website Promotion

For those of you who may be hackers at heart, these are some of the resources we use on a regular basis.

Starting at the top, each of the major search engines provides a way for you to tell them about your site:

And, if you have a phsical location, you'll probably want to submit your information to Google Maps.  This will get you above even the organic listings if you're in the top three.  You'll need to have, or register for a Google account to take advantage of this one.

Inbound links are a big factor in ranking.  In order to quickly generate a significant number of inbound links you might consider directory submission.  Directory Critic has a long list of free directories to which you can submit a listing.

Don't forget, your choice of keywords matters a lot.  You've got to have conent and inbound links which reference your top keywords.  For a good free view of what people are searching for try the Yahoo! Search Marketing Keyword Selector Tool .  If you start broad (like "New Orleans") you'll see all the variations on that broad phrase.

And of course, if you don't want to take the time, we can do it for you.

Finally, if you're of the authorial sort, you can write articles to get your name out.  Article creation and submission is a great way to get links back to your site, and to reinforce your position as an authority in your field.  Directory Critic also has a good list of Article submission sites you can post to.

If you want to go deeper into the techniques and tricks of Search Engine Optimization, I recommend spending LOTS of time (and I mean LOTS) digging through these two sites:
If you're interested, I have the top news from Search Engine Guide and SEO Chat as well as the latest promotion articles from Article Sender and the latest New Orleans headlines as newsfeeds on this site.

These are just a few ideas and resources for DIY Website Promotion.  If you find you'd rather take the easy road, remember, we can do it for you .
